Sunday Morning Drive
I was driving the girls to church this morning when an angry woman in a minivan pulled up right behind our bumper on a busy street and lay on the horn. She was angry, apparently, because our speed-limit driving was not fast enough to suit her.
“Mama, what’s that sound?”
“That’s a horn, honey,” I said calmly. “That lady is honking her horn because she is a bad driver. What she’s doing is called ‘tailgating.’”
The car next to me switched lanes, and the angry minivan driver swerved out to pass me on the right. She gunned the engine, sped up and swerved back into our lane in front of us. Her minivan had no rear windshield, and was covered in plastic and tape. She jammed on her brakes and threw her arms out to the sides in a gesture for me to see. If I had not been driving cautiously, I would have hit her.
“Mama, does God love that lady?”
“Yes, honey. God loves everybody, even when they’re bad drivers.”
And I felt very grateful that I had not lost my temper, but even more grateful that my daughter remembers what’s important better than I do.

Wow — what an insightful daughter you have — and what a well-timed lesson for both of you.

I wonder, from time to time, where all the anger that runs rampant in our society is originating. Too many people listening to talk radio? The decline of dispassionate, reasoned argument? The need to be right about everything? I don’t know really where it originates, but it is amazing how much anger can be generated on the road or in a store or other places where it just isn’t warranted. Sometimes the anger is mine, and it usually stems from a lack of patience. I needed this small reminder — God does love each of those people, and wants them to know Him. That should check my anger, if nothing else does!

They certainly have a way of keeping us honest, don’t they?

Ah, my children have reminded me of what’s important in a similar fashion. Out of the mouths of babes indeed!
