Shameless Plea for Affirmation

I am frequently a lurker on other blogs. I read and don’t comment, sometimes because I feel I’m butting in, sometimes because I enjoy my anonymity, and sometimes because I am a ginormous pregnant woman with low iron and I am tired.

I understand lurking. I don’t mind it. I’m happy you come here and read, even if you don’t say much.

But I am feeling a little grey, and wondering about all those anonymous folks who show up on my sitemeter, wondering why they come or leave or come back again. So how about it? De-lurk for the large, tired pregnant lady ( I am not above playing the pregnancy card whenever it suits me).

Tell me something about yourself that you don’t mind me knowing. Some suggestions:

1) Name of your first childhood crush ( I know I am not the only one who fell for Shaun Cassidy)
2) Favorite flavor of smoothie
3) A discredited fashion that you indulged in (I confess, with trembling, that when I was 12 I had a mullet. Never mention this again).

Robbin and Bub and Pie offered their commenters the enticement of answering any question. Hmm. I can give it a shot, as long as Az the Suspicious doesn’t have any scruples about it. Ask away.

I’m not a lurker here (though I admit to lurking heavily nearly everywhere else) but I can’t resist. This may not mean much to a lot of you younguns but when I was around 10 I had a shag haircut. (Shudder.) It was the ugliest thing ever. What I really wanted was a Dorothy Hamill. But it isn’t what I got.

  2. Robbin

Okay, just to answer your suggestions for fun (and because I have the same wonderings on my OWN site counter):

    1. First childhood crush was Richard Hatch of the first, corny Battlestar Galactica. I have always been a fan of the quiet sensitive type.

    2. I am not a big fan of sweet drinks - does a margarita count? The real lime kind, not the other fruity flavors.

    3. Ooooh. That’s tough. I was once kind of a punker. Oh, wait - I had a Farah-Fawcett haircut in high school. And if that doesn’t date me, I don’t know what does.

And who is your favorite villian?

  3. Chaosity

Ok, the pregnancy card convinced me. I lurk not so much because I don’t want to share, but mostly because I am in such awe at the eloquence you ladies have. I adore reading Antique Mommy and Rocks in My Dryer, and they have great BlogRolls that include you, so I just click away…

Anyway, I’ll bite on your questions:

    1. I was all about Donny Osmond!

    2. I prefer the chocolate/coffee variations on the smoothie. (Mocha Frappucinno)

    3. I’ve had every bad hair-do ever invented (except the mullet!). I’ve had a pixie, a shag, a Farrah Faucett, Dorothy Hammill (although I deny that this one qualifies as a bad hair-do, merely dated), mall bangs, but the worst was my afro. An afro on a very very white girl is a very very bad thing!

I’ve also been there with the blue eyeshadow, glossy lips, blood red lips, nearly black/burgandy lips, heavy eyliner, navy blue pantyhose, white high heeled pumps, leg warmers with skirts or pencil thin jeans, the Annie Hall look (one of my favorites). I’m sure there’s more but you get the idea.

Thanks for all you share, and thanks for urging us out of the lurk-o-sphere!

  4. bubandpie

    1) Almanzo Wilder (the blond one on T.V.)

    2) strawberry

    3) banana clips (actually, I kinda wish I could still get away with wearing a banana clip on days like today)

Are you going to try for a boy?

P.S. I tagged you for a meme/nominated you for a Thinking Blogger award. You can get the detes on my site.

  5. Stephanie

    1) Probably Rick Springfield - my sister and I went to his concert and fought over the binoculars because we were up in the nosebleed section LOL

    2) Not a real smoothie drinker unless you count a strawberry julius…..

    3) Big poofy bangs (this smooth straight hair decade has been a tough adjustment for me) LOL

Just found your blog through Rocks in My Dryer (I think)…

  6. BooMama

I’m not a regular lurker, though I do enjoy the occasional quiet spell.

    1. Scott Baio

    2. not a smoothie girl - but I love me a cafe au lait

    3. leg warmers worn on top of my blue jeans

Now comes the part where I cover my eyes and run screaming from the computer.

    Hang in there.

  7. chickadee

am i a lurker if i read you on bloglines and rarely comment? yes, i guess that would be me.

i’m pregnant too so i’m blaming my brain freeze and inablity to answer any of your questions on that.

  8. Oh, The Joys

I have you on my reader, but don’t always comment…

I like pink smoothies or mango colored ones.

  9. Anonymous

I don’t comment because I don’t have a clever, witty, sassy blog to link to my name! But i do enjoy your entries…

    1) Christopher Atkinson from “The Blue Lagoon”
    2) Something more coffee flavored…like a frozen soy caramel machiato (sp?)
    3) In junior hight I was way into folding over and then rolling up my jean cuffs. So silly. And I had the 3 inch tall bangs through most of high school. yuck.

  10. Beck

    1. Bosley. From Charlie’s Angels.
    2. Strawberry banana with some ginger.
    3. Neon thunderbolt earrings, worn with a short perm. HAWT!

  11. Simple Kim

I don’t see a problem with lurking…I don’t always have something interesting enough to comment back! And I say PLAY that preggo card and enjoy it! It convinced me to stop lurking for a moment.

    1. The boy down the street

    2. Orange, pineapple, and raspberry with vanilla yogurt!

    3. Layered socks…sometimes 3 pair at a time if I was feeling particularly classy! As if my short legs needed help looking shorter. OH MY! I cannot believe I admitted that!

  12. Joyful Days

Okay, the pregnant card won me over.

I always feel like a total goob when I leave comments. Kind of boring, quiet and droopy–think Eyeore and aside from the purple…that’s me.

It is extremely obvious I am much older too, because it was not Shaun Cassidy but David Cassidy I thought was cool.

I don’t do smoothies–more of a tea and coffee person.

Bad fashion was ala Flashdance–hey it was my college dance class but looking back, well… I just want to look forward.

Feel better. The babies are worth the wait.

  13. Tara

I have lurked ever since BooMama linked to your 12 Days of Christmas posts. What I love about your blog is that it has it all: humor, faith, pregnancy, baby names, marriage, parenting. You are a wonderful writer, and it’s always rewarding to see what is on your mind. I’m pregnant too (#4) so I am just too tired to answer all three questions, but I can tell you that in high school I was obsessive about “tight-rolling” the legs of my jeans. So attractive.

  14. Rhonda

I’m an occasional reader and enjoy your ability to think about deep things in the middle of parenting little ones. Thanks for sharing it with the world.

Something about me? I have 4 girls and they once were all under the age of 4. And I tight-rolled my jeans too, back in the day. Oh, and I’m proud to be Canadian. :)

  15. CereneOne

    1)His name was Brian.
    2)I don’t drink Smoothies.
    3)Gouchos

  16. Tara

1…I liked the much older son of my parents friends.
    2) Anything berry. I had a strawberry citrus today, which was very nice.
    3) I think letting my mum dress me was a problem.

  17. Anonymous

    1) Fess Parker as Daniel Boon
    2) Banana Feijoa smoothie
    3) An eighties perm.. it was truly awful

    Kay (NZ)

  18. meredith

I loved John Denver and Barry Manilow.

I still love malted milk smoothies.

I am a product of the eighties, which means a lot of bad perms and leggings with big sweaters.

Would your graduate degree have something to do with theology?

  19. Kit

Silver lipstick has to be the least attractive fashion I went for, though I’m quite fond of the silver nail polish that went with it.

  20. Daren

The pregnancy card lured me out of lurkerdom, too.

I enjoy your blog because it’s got a little of everything. It’s not just a mommyblog (like mine is) it’s a…good blog!

    1. There’s a local newscaster, still on the air, who is currently about 70. Don Cannon. That was my first crush…I loved his snow white head of hair. I have issues.

    2. I like Orange Julius’ original. Does that count?

    3. Pegging my jeans; the Jennifer Aniston haircut.

  21. Anonymous

I can’t think of any interesting ways to answer your questions (this must be why I don’t blog myself!), but I wanted to delurk to say that I found you through Bub and Pie and loved your 12 days of Christmas series.

  22. NotSoSage

Here following B&P’s love-links. And I would totally play the pregnancy card any chance I got!

I love the photos of the trees…a tree coated in ice is one of my favourite images.

    As to the questions:

    1) Charlie, a boy in my first grade class. One lunch hour my sister got me all dolled up and I was to “ask him out” that afternoon. When I wanted to back out, she and a friend of hers picked me up and dumped me unceremoniously at his feet. Oh, the embarassment.

  23. Anonymous

Okay, okay, I admit it, I lurk. But, I love your blog and your insight. Thanks for sharing.

    1. My first crush was named Mike, he was shy with sandy-brown hair. I *almost* asked him to dance with me in middle school and I lost my nerve. My friend is still friends with him today and he is cute as ever.

    2. Mango-banana is delectable.

    3. I had thick, uncute, unstylish bangs for waaaay too long.

  24. Kelli

De-lurking, - and no pregnant woman is “ginormous” :)

    She’s gigorgeous!

    Any-whoo:

    1) Shaun Cassidy- Da Do run RUn baby

    2) Pineapple Raspberry

    3) The Farrah was awesome, but the permed B-Level of 1982 was atrocious. WHich is why I only kept it til 1985 - hehe

    Hugs to the momma!

  25. Kelly

    1) Also digging on Richard Hatch, a la Robbin. I used to fantasize about kissing him, back when that was all I knew how to think about.

    2) I love strawberries in a smoothie.

    3) Stirrup pants! (Burying head in the sand….)

  26. Jennifer

I’m not a lurker but you asked great questions, so I will answer:

    1. Any rockstar with long, permed hair.

    2. Jack and I like to put bananas and whatever is in season in the blender with some milk

    3. Long, permed hair (see above) and I had NO IDEA the Jennifer Aniston haircut was discredited. Why does no one tell me these things? So I should add that too.

  27. Angela Roskop Erisman

    Hi Veronica!

    1. Prince Charles. I think big. And WOW did I get crap for that one in school. Looking back, I think it was only because I wanted to be Princess Diana. It was really all about the dresses.

    2. Strawberry peach.

    3. Banana clips.

  28. Anonymous

My first childhood crush was Micheal Miller, my kindergarten boyfriend. I loved him with all the innocence and passion that a 4 year old loves anyone. My biggest and most recent celebrity crush is Jamie Oliver.

I’m not a fan of the smoothie although I enjoy all the smothing ingredients together in a “yogurt sundae”.

When I was 19 I got the “Rachel” haircut…the very next day was the episode where she suggested her mother copy her haircut. I went from being cool to a laughing stock in 12 hours. {:o)

  29. ewe are here

I *think* I’ve commented here before, but if not, ‘hello’ — from another tired, very-very-pregnant-and-tired-of-it-woman. (38 weeks this weekend — could he just get out already?!? Sheesh!)

  30. ECR

February is definitely a grey month. Something I don’t mind you knowing about me is that February is my least favorite month of all.

  31. Beth

This is my first visit! I’m happy to de-lurk on my first visit for a lovely pregnant girl!

    1. Kirk Cameron?
    2. Strawberry
    3. Rolling or pegging my jeans. And I always had my hair permed. ahhh…good times.

  32. Rachelle

WOW! You have a lot of comments — hope your large pregnant self is smiling!

    1) I was all about the rock stars. Peter Frampton, woo hoo!

    2) Berry (with extra protein)

    3)Leg warmers!

  33. allrileyedup

Not that I require delurking since I’m more of the ‘blog stalker’ variety when it comes to you…

    1. the guys on Voltron. I know they’re animated, but hey, I a young girl can dream.

    2. I don’t indulge in smoothies too often, but I like to make sure that whatever flavor I have does not include banana and does include wheat grass and an immunity booster.

    3. I’d have to go with ruffled poets shirt that was red plaid that I wore tucked into tight red jeans and I curled my hair with those lock n roll curlers. I looked hot at my high school football games.

I have no questions for you. I like finding things out as you choose to divulge them.

  34. sweatpantsmom

    1) Michael Jackson (with his original nose. And original skin color.)

    2) Blueberry/Banana

    3) Shoulder pads *shudder*

  35. Karen

I’ve only lurked here a few times, but I like your blog alot. My PSD keeps me from remembering stuff but I do know that I am deeply saddened by my own dislike of smoothies…I like neither coffee nor the combination of fruit and dairy which so many seem to have. One time I had an amazing strawberry smoothie with an orange juice base and no dairy at all, almost more like a 100% juice slushie; it was awesome.

  36. Kacey

I comment sometimes, but mostly I check over here to see what you have to say on any given day. I have you on my blogroll. Loved your twelve days of Christmas and am looking forward to your Sunday Lenten posts. I love the knicknames for your girls — you are a wonderful writer and shouldn’t be surprized by lurkers. Oh, yeah, the questions—-First crush— An 8th grade boy named Berl, who was dumb as a rock, but really cute!
—I’ve never had a smoothie, but I really love strawberry Blizzards at Dairy Queen
—I’m so old that we didn’t have fashions when I was a kid — unless you count rolled up jeans and men’s white shirts.
—Also, I live at the other end of Ohio in the summer and Florida in the winter.
—I have a grandson who just graduated from 18 months of Arabic Language School in the Air Force who will be decoding messages while flying over the MiddleEast.
So, pray for our military in Iraq.

We are all anxious for your safe delivery of your next daughter. I love babies — am a retired maternity nurse.

  37. Mary-LUE

Wow! It looks like I’m a two days late and lots of comments short. I comment here more than I lurk, I think, so I wasn’t sure if I should participate. Clearly, the regulars wanted to play along, too!

I think I was too afraid of being made fun to even admit to myself who I might have a crush on. I have been told, though, that as a very young girl, I got very excited when the Tom Jones show was on (less than seven years old, I believe).

A question? I’m not sure I can think of one that is unique for you. How about is your grad degree pursuit at the Masters or Ph.D level?

  38. cinnamon gurl

    I can never resist answering a question…

Patrick Swayze a la dirty dancing

    mango

I pinned my jeans in grade 8.

  39. Rebecca

Hope I’m not to late to join in the fun…

1)Luke Skywalker. I was soooo in love. Funny because now that I’m a woman Han is so much more my flavor.

2)I really don’t like smoothies. I’d rather have a milkshake.

3)for the first few weeks of seventh grade I only wore black and white cloths. I had a black and white book bag and black and white notebooks, and black and white socks. I would have kept it up all year, but I couldn’t handle getting made fun of any longer.

  40. Janice (5 Minutes for Mom)

Am I too late to delurk?

from one pregnant lady to another - you rock! :)

  41. Jennifer

When you see Costa Rica in your stats (less now that I use Bloglines), that’s probably me! But I comment sometimes, so you probably knew that anyway…

I think I originally found you to be the blog next to mine on a web ring of some sort.

A rather uninspiring set of answers for you:

    1. Can’t actually recall the crush, although I do recall liking Ponch. And Bo Duke.

    2. Don’t think I’ve ever had a smoothie, although I suspect I’d like them. Chalk me up for anything coffee. Especially if chocolate is involved. And whipped cream. There must be whipped cream.

    3. Probably the curling iron-ed then comb-feathered bangs in my stick-straight hair. But there was also a white satin piano tie. Acid wash jeans. And of course all the thrift-store clothing of my youth.

Something you don’t know about me is that this week I found out that I will be going on a vacation to Greece in June, and have decided that learning Greek online would be a rewarding way to spend the next 3.5 months.
