Happy Birthday to Me

Meredith put up a post of her summer reading stack, and I thought it was a great idea for a meme. As it happens, my favorite used bookstore is having its big 20% Off Everything sale today, and Az watched the kids so I could spend my morning picking out books. It’s a great birthday present.

“Fifty dollars,” he said, giving me my spending limit. I laughed. I am strictly a bargain hunter of books, and have not spent $50 at once on books in years. But it is my birthday (I’m 35 and feel 50, thank you very much) and there was a sale and we are not moving after all so I get to fill up my shelves again. I still didn’t spend $50, but I definitely indulged myself.

So without further ado, here is a promising way to spend $31.50:

Happy Birthday VM! And you don’t look a day over 34. Of course I’ve never actually seen you, but in my mind you are not a day over 34.

Happy birthday, Veronica! You are slightly more than two months older than me, which makes you slightly more than two months wiser, perhaps.
AAAAAA! I just read Murder Sees The Light LAST NIGHT!

Oh, I LOVE the Mallory mysteries.

My husband and I lost over $30K in books in Katrina. The sad thing is, we really haven’t been able to replace any of the books we lost - it strains our budget enough to keep up with our new reading. I know I should just learn to go to the library, but, oh, there is just something about actually owning a book…

Bon Anniversaire! Shopping in a book store is a perfect present.
What are Erle Stanley Gardner’s books like?

Robbin, I love the Mallory mysteries, too. I reviewed one ages ago on my book blog, and it sums up how I feel about the series.

Meredith, Gardner’s books are a little formulaic, but entertaining. They have fallen out of fashion, partly because they are so terribly sexist, but enough time has passed since they were published that I just find the sexism amusing. Gardner also tried to accomplish some good with them; occasionally he wrote prefaces encouraging things like better-funded forensic crime labs to ensure that the proper person is convicted.

    Happy birthday!

You got all those books for a little over 30 dollars? You are a bargain shopper!
